Grammar Point: imperfect verb forms
The imperfect is used to describe a past action that took place over a period of time. It describes a past "situation" rather than a past "event", for example,
Cuando era pequeño, me encantaban los caballos ("When I was young, I really loved horses").
Verbs ending in -
ar (like
hablar ), form their imperfect by adding -
aba , -
abas , etc. (e.g.:
Yo hablaba = "I was speaking"). Verbs in -
er or -
ir form their imperfect by adding -
ía , -
ías , etc. (e.g.:
Yo hacía = "I was doing ..."). Some verbs, like
